The
Karate of Choki Motobu
by Chosei Motobu
Probably
the event most responsible for the worldwide popularity of karate is Master
Choki Motobu's defeat of a western boxer in 1925. Initially ridiculed by the
audience at an "all-comers" prizefight in Kyoto, Japan, laughter turned to
stunned silence when the middle-aged and rather portly Okinawan karate man
knocked his strongly built young opponent unconscious within seconds. Karate
became an overnight sensation, and the mainland Japanese embraced the art
as their own.
So
spectacular it was featured in Kingu, Japan's most popular magazine of the
era, the victory sadly did little for Motobu personally. Illustrations used
in the magazine implied the victor was Gichin Funakoshi, a man inferior in
both social status and fighting ability to Motobu, infuriating the latter,
and ensuring instant fame for Funakoshi who went on to found the Shotokan
style of karate and become a karate legend.
Nonetheless,
Motobu's technical influence on Karate was immense. His students included
Shoshin Nagamine (Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu), Yasuhiro Konishi (Shindo Jines
Ryu) and Hironori Otsuka (Wado Ryu), all of whom formed their own Karate styles
based, in part, upon his teachings.
On
the death of Choki Motobu in 1944 his unique form of karate seemed destined
for extinction. Few members of his original Daidokan Dojo survived the war,
and so little was known of Motobu sensei's private life that most were unaware
of his son Chosei who was destined to carry his father's style into the 21st
century.
This
is the Motobu family system of Tode (karate) presented by Chosei Motobu and
Takeji Inaba including the Kumite techniques and their applications. It is
the only reference work in the West on this style, and is released with full
cooperation and approval of the Motobu family and the Japan Karate Do Motobukai.

A History of the Founder and his style. Kata Naihanchi 1, Kata Naihanchi 2,
Jiyu Hon Kumite (the twelve true fighting methods of Motobu Ryu Karate).

Matsubayashi
Shorin Ryu Karate vol.II
by Takayoshi Nagamine
This
video program presents the first ten Kata of the Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu karate
syllabus up to Naihanchi Sandan performed by the present headmaster Takayoshi
Nagamine 9th Dan, assisted by senior instructors Yasuhiro Makishi 9th Dan,

Each
Kata is performed at full speed and shown in slow motion; the most important
technical points are then explained by Nagamine sensei, and the applications
of fundamental techniques demonstrated by the three instructors. Key issues
discussed include the development of explosive striking power, the most vulnerable
targets to attack, and the differences between applications as they are performed
in the kata, and their use in realistic self defense situations.

The
Karate of Chotoku Kyan
Seibukan Karate
by Zenpo Shimabukuro
Small
of stature, karate master Chotoku Kyan developed a form of karate so effective
it made his name a legend in Okinawa. From the early 1930s Zenryo Shimabukuro
studied with Kyan sensei, and when he had mastered the art of his mentor, opened
his own training hall, the Seibukan. In time he was succeeded by his son, our
author, Zenpo.
Seibukan
Shorin Ryu karate is a traditional, kata based system that retains complete
combat effectiveness. The legacy of Kyan is still seen today in its speed,
ferocity, and power - attributes that distinguish it from more modern karate
systems.
According
to Kyan sensei mastery of his art involved: "seventy per cent perspiration
and thirty per cent inspiration." The modern student who follows the advice
of this legendary martial artist will find the effort worthwhile, and the
prize a rich one.
Contents:
The History of the Seibukan; The kata of Chotohu Kyan; Passai, Chinto, Kusanku,
Seisan, Anaku, Wanshu, Gojushiho, Wanchin. Performed
by Zenpo Shimabukuro, 9th Dan, Seibukan
