The first
of this series served as an introduction to the style that was founded by
the author's father, Shoshin Nagamine, a student of both Chotoku Kyan and
Choki Motobu. As the cover notes suggest, this second volume deals with
the technical aspects of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu karate, especially the
kata, and is designed to be used with the style's standard textbook, Essence
of Okinawan Karate, written by its founder.
Matsu-bayashi
Shorin Ryu kata are viewed by adherents as both a catalog of tech-niques
and the key to correct movement, timing and focus. As such they must be
learned correctly and practised without fail if mastery is to achieved and
maintained. As we have come to expect from this production house, the technical
quality is very high and the show well organized, easy to follow, pleasing
to the eye and has excellent sound. Fukyu 1 & 2, Pinan 1-5 and Naihanchi
1-3 are shown in detail and from different angles, and the performances
are supplemented by demonstrations of the applications by instructors Maikishi
and Taira and on camera explanations of technical points by Nagamine sensei
himself.
Filmed on
location at the beautiful Suiho En dojo in Los Angeles, this show is essential
viewing for all Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu adherents as well as those from
similar technical backgrounds. If you have a copy of Essence of Okinawan
Karate, you really must buy this video.
