About a Custom
Embroidered belt!
We
carry traditionally made (sewn) belts in sizes 1.5" & 1.75"
wide and many, many colors. We can embroider your name and style,
almost anything in fact, and we embroider right through the belt so no
stitching obscures the design. We sew with "gyosho" style Japanese
calligraphy which is very beautiful and unique to our company.
Embroidered
belts start at around $20.

Tenugui,
literally "hand wipe", were first produced during the Edo Era (1603-1868)
and was soon regarded as one of the seven essential items for travelers.
As a towel it was light and easy to carry, soft on the skin, and being
woven without seams, dried easily in the humid Japanese climate.
It could also be used to bind wounds, repair the straw sandals commonly
worn at that time, and for a dozen other purposes that made it indispensable.
In
martial arts dojos it was worn around the forehead to prevent sweat
running into the eyes, under the fencing mask for comfort and additional
protection, and through the sash at the waist as an ever present aid
to keeping the hands dry in order to secure a firm grip on a weapon.
A well worn and much washed tenugui was
the mark of a serious student who had trained hard, and was therefore
highly valued.
Our
tenugui are made especially for our company
from Japanese cotton gauze called Oka momen that is normally used for
cotton kimono or yukata, and is therefore of much higher quality and
slightly wider then that normally used for this purpose. Unlike
the commercially screen printed variety, these are dyed in the traditional
manner so the color penetrates the fabric completely, making it legible
from both sides and ensuring that it takes on just the right look after
repeated use and washing.
Collectors'
edition tenugui dyed in black and red (seal)
on white gauze 13.5" X 35" can be used for its original purpose,
or framed as a unique decoration for the home or dojo.
